Lori Emerson published, along with her co-editors Marie-Laure Ryan and Benjamin Robertson, the Johns Hopkins Guide to Digital Media in March 2014. The contributors present entries on nearly 150 ideas, genres, and theoretical concepts that have allowed digital media to produce some of the most innovative intellectual, artistic, and social practices of our time.




Crapshoot Mark Amerika's newly commissioned artwork, Crapshoot, an interactive web app that remixes Stephane Mallarmé's Un coup de des jamais n'abolira le hasard, will launch at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art in Karlsruhe, Germany, in October 2014.





Reading, Writing, Interfaces In May 2014, DATA Co-Director Lori Emerson published her monograph, Reading Writing Interfaces: From the Digital to the Bookbound (University of Minnesota Press).

In the fall of 2013, DATA co-director Mark Amerika was appointed the visiting International Research Chair at the University of Paris 8 as part of the Labex Arts-H2H research center. While in Paris, Professor Amerika conducted a transdisciplinary seminar on "The Transmedia Writer in Network Culture" and performed his work, Remixing Personae: The Life and Times of the Artist 2.0, at the Théâtre du Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique (CNSAD) in Paris.

A survey of Mark Amerika's practice-based research art projects was recently on exhibit at University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery as part of the inaugural edition of CONVERGENCE. The CONVERGENCE series encompasses and explores the impact of Internet art, digital, electronic, sound, and a wide range of new, traditional, and hybrid technologies on communication and art. This extended, interactive installation was titled Glitch.Click.Thunk and engaged visitors and students in hands-on exchanges between letter-press, litho-process, and state-of-the-art digital imaging via live audio/visual performance workshops within the galleries. The exhibition featured many remix artworks from Amerika's Museum of Glitch Aesthetics and his feature-length mobile phone film, Immobilité.



The Media Archaeology Lab continues to run a highly successful artist residency series. Since September 2013, the MAL has hosted twelve artists both locally and virtually. Currently, MAL has four artist-in-residents who are taking advantage of the lab's incredible collection of over 1000 still functioning pieces of hardware, software, and old media.


This past fall, Counterpath Gallery in Denver hosted the opening for the exhibition, publication, and collaborative performance SIG_NULL. The exhibition featured new work from ten Graduate students affiliated with the TECHNE practice-based research lab whom experimented in forms such as dirty new media, found film, the #NewAesthetic, transmedia narrative, artist e-books, conceptual writing, and applied remixology. The limited edition print publication was created via a collaboratively authored and designed book sprint performed by all of the artists.
